A multibillion-dollar fiber agreement aims to expand high-speed broadband while creating the network capacity needed for growing artificial intelligence demands.
New York, 11 September 2026 – Verizon is taking a major step toward expanding its broadband network and preparing for the growing demands of artificial intelligence. The telecommunications company has entered into a multibillion-dollar agreement with Corning to secure more than 80 million miles of high-density optical fiber and connectivity solutions between 2027 and 2032.
The agreement builds on a partnership between Verizon and Corning that has lasted for three decades. While the financial details were not disclosed, the deal is designed to provide Verizon with a steady supply of advanced fiber as it expands connectivity for homes, businesses, mobile networks, and data centers.
At its core, the agreement is about building more capacity. As people, companies, and digital services use more data, telecommunications networks need to move information faster and more efficiently. Optical fiber plays an important role because it can carry very large amounts of data over long distances with low delays.
Verizon plans to use the new fiber to accelerate its broadband expansion, with a goal of reaching between 40 million and 50 million broadband passings. This means more homes and businesses could gain access to high-speed fiber connectivity as the network grows.
The same infrastructure will also support the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence ecosystem. AI applications require large amounts of computing power, and the data centers running these systems need fast connections capable of handling enormous volumes of information.
Verizon says its network strategy will include high-capacity, low-latency connections between major data centers. These connections are expected to support AI hyperscalers and other organizations that operate large-scale computing infrastructure.
This approach also brings together different parts of Verizon’s network. Instead of treating residential broadband, mobile connectivity, business services, and data center connections as completely separate systems, the company plans to build a more unified network architecture.

Corning will supply the optical fiber, cable, and connectivity technologies required for the expansion. The company is also expected to increase its manufacturing capacity to support Verizon’s long-term requirements. One of the technologies highlighted in the agreement is Corning Contour Flow Cable, which allows more optical fiber to be placed within existing conduit pathways.
The partnership comes at a time when fiber infrastructure is becoming increasingly important to both broadband expansion and AI development. As digital services continue to grow, the physical networks connecting users, businesses, and data centers are becoming just as important as the technologies operating on top of them.
