RWE Expands US Renewable Energy Portfolio with 2GW Capacity Boost

New solar, wind, and battery storage projects strengthen grid reliability and support the growth of clean energy across multiple states

Dallas, Texas, 12 March 2026 – RWE has significantly expanded its renewable energy footprint in the United States by adding 2 gigawatts (GW) of new operating capacity in 2025. With this addition, the company’s total operational capacity across the country has reached nearly 13GW, highlighting its continued investment in clean energy infrastructure and large-scale renewable power projects.

During 2025, the energy company launched 15 new projects across seven states, further strengthening its presence in the growing renewable energy sector. These projects include six solar power facilities, four battery energy storage systems (BESS), and five wind energy installations. The expansion also allowed RWE to enter new markets, including Kentucky with the Ashwood Solar project and Louisiana with the Lafitte Solar project. These developments reflect the increasing demand for sustainable energy solutions and the rising importance of solar and wind power in the modern energy mix.

Battery energy storage systems have become a critical component of RWE’s strategy to improve grid reliability and manage fluctuating renewable power generation. The company developed BESS projects with a combined capacity of 450 megawatts and 1,020 megawatt-hours across Texas and California. These advanced energy storage systems allow electricity generated from solar and wind sources to be stored and delivered when energy demand rises, supporting efficient power management and energy transition goals.

In October 2024, RWE began construction on major renewable energy projects, including Crowned Heron 1, Crowned Heron 2, and Cartwheel 1. Hanson Wood, head of development for utility-scale renewables at RWE Clean Energy, described the projects as an important milestone in strengthening energy infrastructure within the Electric Reliability Council of Texas region.

These projects are designed to support the region’s growing electricity demand while enhancing grid stability through renewable power generation.

One of the notable developments in RWE’s energy storage portfolio is the Ventasso battery energy storage project. The facility uses 33 containerized battery units designed to store electricity and release it when required by the grid. In addition to improving grid flexibility, the project supported approximately 100 jobs during the construction phase, contributing to local economic development.

Later in 2025, RWE Clean Energy commissioned the Stoneridge solar-plus-storage project in Texas. This project combines solar energy generation with integrated battery storage technology, enabling renewable power to be stored and supplied to the grid when needed. The project was completed in line with the timeline announced earlier by RWE CEO Markus Krebber, demonstrating the company’s commitment to expanding reliable renewable energy infrastructure.

As the renewable energy sector continues to grow in the United States, projects that combine solar power, wind energy, and battery storage systems are becoming increasingly important. These technologies help balance electricity supply and demand, making clean energy more reliable and accessible.
